Hydraulic Pressure Sensor Range/Performance

Severity
High
Driving
Drive only to a garage

The hydraulic pressure sensor is answering, but the pressure it reports is not plausible - it does not rise when the pump runs, does not fall as the actuators use it, or sits at an unlikely value. Either the sensor is wrong, or the pressure genuinely is, and the second is the more likely and more serious.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Check the hydraulic fluid level and look for leaks. A leak is the most common cause and it is visible from underneath.
  2. Listen to how often the pump runs. Frequent cycling with the car standing still means pressure is escaping somewhere.
  3. Watch the pressure reading on the live data screen through a pump cycle - it should rise steadily and then hold.
  4. Suspect the accumulator if pressure rises normally but falls away quickly once the pump stops.
  5. Read all codes - a pressure unit or pump relay code alongside this one names the component.
