Gear Shift Position Circuit

Severity
High
Driving
Drive only to a garage

A fault in the gear shift position circuit. This is the other axis of the selector shaft - the fore and aft movement that actually engages a gear once the gate has been chosen. Without a believable position reading the module cannot confirm a gear is engaged, so it will not complete the shift.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Watch the gear shift position on the live data screen during an attempted change. A reading that does not move names the fault.
  2. Check the reference voltage and earth at the sensor.
  3. Inspect the connector at the gearbox for corrosion and water.
  4. Run the position calibration procedure - routine after any actuator work on these transmissions.
  5. Read all codes. Gate select and gear shift codes together usually point at a shared supply, earth or connector rather than at two failed sensors.

Read this code from your own car

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
