Hydraulic Oil Temperature Sensor Circuit

Severity
Medium
Driving
Drivable — book it in

A fault in the hydraulic oil temperature sensor circuit. The module uses fluid temperature to adjust how it drives the actuators, because cold fluid is thicker and moves more slowly. Without a believable reading it takes a cautious default, so gear changes may feel slow or harsh - particularly from cold.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Compare the reported temperature with ambient on a vehicle that has stood overnight. A reading far from ambient on a cold car proves the sensor wrong without any dismantling.
  2. Check the reference voltage and earth at the sensor.
  3. Inspect the connector for corrosion and fluid.
  4. Check the hydraulic fluid level and condition.
  5. Read all codes - a hydraulic pressure code alongside this one is the more urgent one.

Read this code from your own car

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
