Gate Select Position Circuit Intermittent

Severity
High
Driving
Drive only to a garage

The gate select position signal is dropping out intermittently. Gear changes work most of the time and then occasionally fail, often leaving the car in neutral until it is restarted. Intermittent faults here are usually connections rather than the sensor.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Note when it happens. Hot points at the sensor, bumps point at wiring, wet points at the connector - that observation is worth more than any single measurement.
  2. Wiggle-test the harness at the gearbox with the live data screen showing gate position.
  3. Inspect the connector for a pin that has backed out of its housing.
  4. Run the position calibration and see whether the fault returns.
  5. Do not replace the sensor on an intermittent code alone.

Read this code from your own car

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
