Gear Shift Lock Solenoid Control Circuit Low

Severity
High
Driving
Drivable — book it in

The gear shift lock solenoid circuit is reading low - typically shorted to earth or open circuit. The module cannot control the park lock, so the lever may be trapped in park or may not be locked at all.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Disconnect the solenoid and check whether the low reading persists at the harness.
  2. Measure the solenoid winding resistance against specification.
  3. Inspect the connector under the console.
  4. Check the fuse and the brake switch circuit.
  5. If the lever is trapped, use the manual override release described in the handbook rather than forcing it - forcing the lever breaks the detent mechanism and turns an electrical fault into a mechanical one.
