Gear Shift Position Circuit High

Severity
High
Driving
Drive only to a garage

The gear shift position signal is stuck high - typically shorted to voltage or a lost earth. The module cannot confirm whether a gear is engaged, so it will refuse to complete a shift and will usually leave the car in neutral.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Unplug the sensor and check whether the high reading persists at the harness.
  2. Check the reference voltage and earth before condemning the sensor.
  3. Inspect the connector for corrosion and water.
  4. Look for other codes sharing the same reference circuit.
  5. Run the position calibration after any repair.
