Gear Shift Lock Solenoid Control Circuit/Open

Severity

Driving

An open circuit or general electrical fault in the gear shift lock solenoid circuit. This solenoid locks the selector lever in park until the brake pedal is pressed. Depending on which way the fault goes it either traps the lever in park, or - more seriously - stops locking it at all, so the lever can be knocked out of park without the brake being applied.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Check whether the brake lights work. The shift lock releases on the brake switch signal, so a brake switch fault is the most common cause and it announces itself at the back of the car.
  2. Test whether the lever moves out of park without the brake pedal pressed. If it does, the lock is not working and the vehicle should be parked with the handbrake firmly applied until it is repaired.
  3. Check the fuse for the circuit.
  4. Inspect the selector assembly for spilled drink - console selectors sit under cup holders.
  5. If the lever is trapped in park, the vehicle has a manual override release. Its location is in the handbook; use that to move the car rather than forcing the lever.
