Clutch Actuator Circuit Range/Performance

Severity
High
Driving
Drive only to a garage

The clutch actuator circuit is electrically sound but the actuator is not performing as expected - moving too slowly, not reaching its commanded position, or drawing the wrong current. On a high-mileage automated transmission this often means the clutch itself is worn beyond what the actuator can compensate for, rather than the actuator being faulty.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Run the clutch adaptation procedure first. On these transmissions it is a routine step and it resolves a large share of these codes without any parts.
  2. Assess clutch wear. A clutch near the end of its life moves the engagement point outside the range the actuator can follow.
  3. Watch commanded against actual clutch position on the live data screen through a full cycle.
  4. Check the hydraulic fluid level and look for leaks on a hydraulically actuated system.
  5. Check the wiring for high resistance before replacing the actuator.
