Clutch Actuator Circuit/Open

Severity
High
Driving
Drive only to a garage

An open circuit or general electrical fault in the clutch actuator circuit. On an automated manual or dual-clutch transmission there is no clutch pedal - a motor or hydraulic actuator does the work. If the module cannot drive that actuator, the clutch cannot be operated and the car will usually not move at all.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Check the fuses on the actuator supply before anything else - it is the cheapest possibility and a common one.
  2. Inspect the connector at the actuator for corrosion and water. It sits near the bellhousing, which is hot and exposed.
  3. Measure the actuator winding resistance against specification.
  4. Check continuity through the harness between the module and the actuator.
  5. Check whether the vehicle needs the clutch adaptation procedure re-running after any repair here - on these transmissions that step is routine, not optional.

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
