Gear Shift Position Control Error

Severity
High
Driving
Drive only to a garage

The module commanded the selector shaft into a gear and it did not get there. The circuits are not being blamed - this is the mechanism physically failing to engage. Because the shaft can end up between positions, the car may be left unable to select any gear at all.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Read all codes first. Hydraulic pressure or clutch codes alongside this one usually explain it.
  2. Check whether the clutch is releasing fully. A gear cannot be engaged against a clutch that is still driving, and that presents as a shift failure rather than a clutch fault.
  3. Run the calibration procedure. If the code returns immediately, the fault is mechanical or hydraulic.
  4. Check hydraulic pressure and look for leaks.
  5. Grinding during engagement points at gearbox wear rather than at the control system.
  6. A gearbox that cannot select a gear may leave you stranded. Do not rely on it for a journey until it is fixed.

Read this code from your own car

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
