P0964

Pressure Control Solenoid "B" Control Circuit/Open

Severity
High
Driving
Drive only to a garage

An open circuit or general fault in the control circuit for pressure control solenoid "B". This is the same physical solenoid as P0775, seen from the module's driver side rather than from the solenoid's behaviour - so if both codes are stored, they are one fault and should be diagnosed together. Without control of this solenoid the module cannot set line pressure and will default to a failsafe.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Read all transmission codes first. Several solenoid control circuit codes at once point at the case connector or the internal harness, not at several failed solenoids - that observation saves a great deal of unnecessary work.
  2. Pull the transmission case connector and look for fluid inside it. Fluid wicking up the harness corrodes the pins and can reach and destroy the control module itself.
  3. Measure the solenoid winding resistance at the case connector against specification.
  4. Check the harness between the module and the transmission for chafe damage.
  5. Check the fluid level and condition while the vehicle is raised.

Read this code from your own car

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
