Gear Shift Position Circuit Range/Performance

Severity
High
Driving
Drive only to a garage

The gear shift position sensor is answering but its reading does not agree with what the module expects - the shaft is not ending up where the module believes it commanded. Usually lost calibration or mechanical wear rather than a dead sensor.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Run the position calibration procedure first.
  2. Watch reported against commanded position through a full sweep.
  3. Check hydraulic pressure on a hydraulically actuated system.
  4. Consider gearbox wear. Worn synchromesh makes engagement slow enough for the module to call it a fault, and no amount of electrical work will fix that.
  5. Read all codes for actuator or hydraulic faults alongside.

Read this code from your own car

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
