Transmission Component Slipping

Severity
High
Driving
Drive only to a garage

The module has measured a component inside the transmission slipping - a clutch or band that is not holding what it is being asked to hold. Input and output speeds do not match the commanded gear. Something inside is worn, or is not being clamped hard enough to grip.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Check the fluid level and condition first, and look for clutch material - a dark grey gritty film means the clutches are already wearing away.
  2. Confirm the slip by driving: in a high gear at low speed, apply throttle and see whether engine speed climbs faster than road speed.
  3. A line pressure test separates worn clutches from low pressure. Low pressure is repairable; worn clutches usually mean a rebuild.
  4. Read all codes. Ratio codes alongside this one identify which gear is slipping.
  5. Stop driving it hard. Slipping generates heat, heat destroys the friction material, and the damage compounds quickly.
  6. Get a realistic assessment before spending. A slipping transmission with burnt fluid rarely responds to anything short of a rebuild.
