Gear Lever X Position Circuit Intermittent

Severity
Medium
Driving

The gear lever X position signal is dropping out intermittently. The selector works, then briefly does not, then works again. The car may refuse a gear change once and behave normally afterwards. As always with intermittent circuits, connections are more likely than components.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Move the lever slowly through the gate while watching the X reading. A dropout at one specific position points at a worn track inside the selector.
  2. Wiggle-test the connector under the console.
  3. Check for a spilled drink. Sticky residue produces exactly this intermittent behaviour.
  4. Inspect the connector for a backed-out pin.
  5. Note whether the fault correlates with temperature or with the console being knocked.

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
