TCM Power Input Signal Intermittent

Severity
High
Driving
Drive only to a garage

The transmission module's supply voltage is dropping out or fluctuating intermittently. The transmission may behave perfectly for days and then shift harshly or drop into limp mode. Intermittent supply faults are usually a connection - a terminal, an earth or a relay - rather than a failed component.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Wiggle-test the battery terminals and the main earth straps with the engine running while watching voltage on the live data screen.
  2. Have the battery load tested. A battery on the way out produces intermittent faults across the whole vehicle before it fails outright.
  3. Swap the supply relay for an identical one elsewhere in the box and see whether the fault follows it.
  4. Perform a voltage drop test on the supply and earth circuits.
  5. Record the freeze frame data. Knowing what the voltage was when the code set often identifies the problem straight away.

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
