Up and Down Shift Switch Circuit Low

Severity
Low
Driving
No driving restriction

The up-and-down shift switch circuit is stuck low - typically shorted to earth, or a switch stuck closed. The module either sees a shift being requested constantly, or never sees one at all. On some vehicles a stuck-closed switch causes the transmission to keep trying to shift, which is more noticeable than simply losing manual mode.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Watch the switch state on the live data screen without touching anything. A reading that already shows the switch operated identifies a stuck switch immediately.
  2. Unplug the switch and see whether the low reading persists at the harness.
  3. Inspect a console switch for spilled drink, which is the most common cause of a stuck console switch.
  4. Check the clock spring on steering-wheel-mounted switches.
  5. Confirm automatic shifting is unaffected before deciding how urgent this is.
