Shift Time Too Long

Severity
High
Driving
Drive only to a garage

Shifts are taking longer than the module expects. A shift that drags means the clutch is slipping while it engages instead of gripping cleanly, and every one of those slow shifts wears the friction material. This is the more damaging of the two shift timing codes.

What to check, in order

  1. Check the fluid level and condition first, and look for clutch material.
  2. A line pressure test tells you whether the hydraulics can deliver what the clutches need.
  3. Read all codes. Ratio codes alongside this one identify which clutch is slipping.
  4. Check the filter if it has never been changed.
  5. Do not put off this repair. Every slow shift wears the clutch further, and the fault gets worse at an accelerating rate.

Read this code from your own car

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
