1-4 Upshift (Skip Shift) Solenoid Control Circuit

Severity
Low
Driving
No driving restriction

A fault in the control circuit for the skip shift solenoid. On some manual-transmission vehicles the module deliberately blocks second and third gear at light throttle, forcing a shift straight from first to fourth to save fuel. This code means that solenoid circuit has faulted - so either the block stops working, or it stays engaged and you cannot select second or third at low throttle openings.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Establish whether the block is stuck on or stuck off. Being unable to select second gear at light throttle is a stuck-on solenoid; the feature simply never happening is a stuck-off one.
  2. Inspect the connector at the solenoid on the gearbox.
  3. Measure the solenoid winding resistance against specification.
  4. Ask whether a skip shift eliminator has been fitted. These devices are common and they set exactly this code by design.
  5. Check the fuse for the circuit.
