Clutch Position Sensor Circuit High

Severity

Driving

The clutch position sensor signal is stuck high - typically shorted to voltage or an open earth. The module has no usable idea where the clutch is, so it will not attempt to control engagement normally. On many automated transmissions that means the car will not drive at all.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Unplug the sensor and check whether the high reading persists at the harness. If it does, the fault is in the wiring rather than the sensor.
  2. Check the reference voltage and earth at the sensor - a lost earth commonly drives a signal high, so P0808 is not always a shorted signal wire.
  3. Inspect the connector for corrosion and water.
  4. Follow the harness around the bellhousing looking for heat and chafe damage.
  5. Look for other codes sharing the same reference circuit before condemning this sensor.

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
