Transmission Fluid Deteriorated

The transmission fluid has been judged to be worn out. This is not usually a measurement of the fluid itself - most vehicles calculate it from how long the fluid has been in service and how hot it has been, since heat is what degrades it. It is a maintenance reminder with real substance behind it: degraded fluid loses the friction properties the clutches depend on, and everything else in this family gets more likely once it does.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Look at the fluid. Fresh fluid is clear and bright; degraded fluid is dark and smells burnt. That check is free and tells you whether the calculation matches reality.
  2. Change the fluid and filter using the exact specification the manufacturer names. Fluid specification is not interchangeable on modern automatics, and fitting the wrong one causes shift complaints that look like mechanical faults.
  3. Reset the service counter after the change if the vehicle has one. On many vehicles the code returns otherwise, however new the fluid is.
  4. Check the fluid cooler and its lines if the fluid has overheated. A blocked cooler will cook the new fluid as quickly as the old.
  5. Ask about towing and heavy use, which shorten fluid life legitimately.
  6. Treat this as a genuine warning rather than an upsell. Degraded fluid is the root cause behind a large share of the expensive faults in this family.
