Shift Time Too Short

Severity
Medium
Driving
Drivable — book it in

Shifts are completing faster than the module expects. A shift that happens too quickly means the clutch is being clamped abruptly rather than being brought in smoothly, which is felt as a bang and puts a shock load through the driveline. Usually pressure is too high, or the module is compensating for something.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Read all codes first. A module that has raised pressure to protect itself does so because of another fault, so this code is often a consequence rather than a cause.
  2. Check whether an adaptation reset is specified. Adaptation values left over from a previous state are a common cause of harsh shifts after a repair.
  3. Check the fluid level, condition and specification.
  4. Watch commanded against actual line pressure on the live data screen if available.
  5. Drive gently until it is fixed - harsh shifts load mountings and driveshafts.

Read this code from your own car

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
