Clutch Position Sensor Circuit Intermittent

Severity
Medium
Driving

The clutch position signal is dropping out intermittently. The car may drive normally for a while and then engage harshly or refuse to move, recovering later. Intermittent faults of this kind are nearly always connections or wiring rather than the sensor itself.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Note when it happens. Hot points at the sensor, bumps point at wiring, wet points at the connector - that observation is worth more than any single measurement.
  2. Wiggle-test the harness with the live data screen showing clutch position.
  3. Inspect the connector for a pin that has backed out of its housing.
  4. Run the clutch calibration procedure and see whether the fault returns.
  5. Do not replace the sensor on an intermittent code alone - confirm the dropout at the sensor.

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
