Driveline Disconnect Switch Input Circuit

Severity
Medium
Driving
Drivable — book it in

A fault in the driveline disconnect switch input circuit. This switch tells the module whether the driveline is connected - on four-wheel drive and part-time systems, whether the front axle or transfer case is engaged. Without a believable reading the module cannot know how the vehicle is driven, so it may refuse to change drive modes or may default to one.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Watch the switch state on the live data screen while changing drive mode.
  2. Inspect the switch and its connector underneath. Corrosion here is the most common cause by a wide margin.
  3. Check the actuator actually completes its travel. A switch reporting correctly on a mechanism that has not fully engaged is not a switch fault.
  4. Check the wiring under the vehicle for chafe and impact damage.
  5. Check the transfer case fluid level while you are underneath.
