Transmission Fluid Pressure High

Severity
High
Driving
Drive only to a garage

Transmission fluid pressure is higher than it should be. The clutches are being clamped harder than intended, so shifts arrive abruptly and the whole driveline takes a shock each time. It is less immediately destructive than low pressure, but it is hard on mountings, driveshafts and the transmission itself.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Read all codes first. Modules deliberately raise line pressure to maximum as a protective failsafe when something else has faulted, so this code is often a consequence rather than a cause.
  2. Check the fluid level, condition and specification.
  3. Watch commanded against actual pressure on the live data screen if the vehicle reports both.
  4. A pressure test confirms whether the pressure is genuinely high or the sensor is wrong.
  5. Drive gently until it is fixed. Every harsh shift is a shock load through the driveline.

Read this code from your own car

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
