Up and Down Shift Switch to Transmission Range Correlation

Severity
Medium
Driving
Drivable — book it in

The up and down shift switches and the transmission range sensor do not agree. The module is being told the driver is in manual mode and requesting shifts, while the selector position says something different - or the other way round. Two sources that should match do not, and the module cannot tell which one is lying.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Watch both the selector position and the switch states on the live data screen while moving the lever through its full travel. The one that does not match reality is the fault.
  2. Check the range sensor adjustment before replacing anything - adjustment is often the whole repair.
  3. Check the selector cable and linkage for wear and free play.
  4. Inspect the selector assembly for a worn detent or a broken return spring.
  5. Check for range sensor codes stored alongside, which would point the diagnosis at the sensor rather than the switches.
