Torque Converter Clutch Pressure Control Solenoid Control Circuit Stuck On

Severity
High
Driving
Drive only to a garage

The torque converter clutch pressure solenoid is stuck on, so the converter clutch stays locked. With the engine coupled directly to the wheels and nothing to absorb the difference, the engine is dragged down as you slow and stalls - much like stopping in gear in a manual car without pressing the clutch.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Treat stalling in traffic as urgent. When the engine stops, power steering and brake servo assistance go with it, at exactly the moment you are manoeuvring.
  2. You can usually keep moving by selecting neutral as you slow to a stop, but that is a way of getting home, not a repair.
  3. Check the fluid level and condition first. It is the cheapest check and it explains more transmission complaints than every electrical fault combined.
