Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Low

The torque converter clutch circuit is reading low - typically shorted to earth or an open circuit. The converter clutch cannot be controlled, so it will not lock at cruising speed. The car drives normally but the engine sits at higher revs on the motorway and uses noticeably more fuel.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Disconnect at the case connector and check whether the low reading persists at the harness side.
  2. Pull the transmission case connector and look for fluid inside it. Fluid wicking up the harness corrodes the pins and can reach and destroy the control module itself.
  3. Check the fluid level and condition first. It is the cheapest check and it explains more transmission complaints than every electrical fault combined.
  4. A converter clutch that never locks makes the transmission run hotter, which shortens fluid life. Worth fixing even though nothing feels wrong.
