Transmission Fluid Cooler Control Circuit/Open

Severity
Medium
Driving
Drivable — book it in

An open circuit in the transmission fluid cooler control. Some transmissions can route fluid through or around the cooler, warming up faster in cold weather and cooling harder under load. With the control open, the fluid stays on whichever path the valve defaults to.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Check the cooler and its lines for blockage, leaks and external debris.
  2. Inspect the connector and wiring at the control valve.
  3. Measure the solenoid winding resistance against specification.
  4. Watch transmission fluid temperature on a normal drive - it should rise and then hold steady.
  5. Check the fluid level and condition first. It is the cheapest check and it explains more transmission complaints than every electrical fault combined.
