Torque Converter Clutch Pressure Control Solenoid Control Circuit Performance or Stuck Off

Severity

The torque converter clutch pressure solenoid is electrically sound but not applying the clutch as commanded. This produces the classic converter shudder: a vibration at light throttle around cruising speed that feels very like a light misfire.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Rule out an engine misfire. A light misfire at cruise feels almost identical from the driver's seat and the fix is completely different.
  2. Ask what fluid was fitted at the last service. Fluid of the wrong specification is a frequent cause of converter shudder.
  3. Check the fluid level and condition first. It is the cheapest check and it explains more transmission complaints than every electrical fault combined.
