Clutch Temperature Too High

Severity
High
Driving
Drive only to a garage

The clutch is overheating. On an automated manual or dual-clutch transmission the clutch is slipped by the module to move the car away from rest, and doing that repeatedly - in traffic, on a hill, or manoeuvring - generates a great deal of heat. The transmission will protect itself by reducing power or refusing to move until it cools.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Stop somewhere safe and let it cool. Continuing puts the clutch through more of exactly what is damaging it.
  2. Use the brakes to hold the car on a slope, never the transmission. On these gearboxes that single habit is the difference between a clutch that lasts and one that does not.
  3. If there is a burning smell, the clutch is already being damaged - do not continue.
  4. Assess clutch wear, and look for oil contamination from a leaking crankshaft or gearbox seal.
  5. Run the clutch adaptation procedure and check whether it improves matters.
