Pressure Control Solenoid "E" Performance or Stuck Off

Severity
High
Driving
Drive only to a garage

Pressure control solenoid "E" is electrically sound but is not controlling pressure as commanded. Line pressure is therefore wrong, and since line pressure is what holds the clutches together, the transmission will either slip or shift very harshly.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. A proper line pressure test with a gauge is the way to separate a solenoid fault from a worn pump. It is worth paying for before buying parts.
  2. Slipping clutches destroy themselves quickly. Do not keep driving a transmission that slips while you decide what to do.
  3. Check the fluid level and condition first. It is the cheapest check and it explains more transmission complaints than every electrical fault combined.

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
