Torque Converter Temperature Too High

Severity
High
Driving
Drive only to a garage

The torque converter is running too hot. A torque converter generates heat whenever it is slipping - which is normal at low speed, but sustained under load it produces a great deal of it. Heat is what destroys transmission fluid, and degraded fluid then damages the clutches it should be protecting.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Stop somewhere safe and let it cool with the engine idling in neutral or park. That circulates fluid through the cooler without adding load and is the quickest way to bring the temperature down.
  2. If you are towing or heavily loaded, that is very likely the cause. Use a lower gear on long climbs so the converter is not slipping.
  3. Read all codes. A converter clutch code alongside this one explains where the heat is coming from.
  4. Check the fluid level and condition once cool. Burnt-smelling fluid means damage has begun.
  5. Check the cooler and its lines for blockage, and the radiator for debris blocking airflow.
