Four Wheel Drive (4WD) Low Switch Circuit

Severity

A fault in the four-wheel drive low range switch circuit. This switch tells the module that low range has been selected, which matters because the transmission's shift points and the stability systems all need to know the gearing has changed.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Watch the switch state on the live data screen while selecting low range.
  2. Inspect the switch connector underneath - corrosion here is the most common cause by a wide margin.
  3. Check the transfer case actuator completes its travel. A switch reporting correctly on a mechanism that has not fully engaged is not a switch fault.
  4. Check the transfer case fluid level while underneath.
  5. Check for transfer case codes stored alongside.
