Shift Solenoid "F" Stuck On

Severity
High
Driving
Drive only to a garage

Shift solenoid "F" is stuck on - applying when it should be released. The transmission can end up trying to hold two gears at once, which it will not tolerate: expect very harsh behaviour, a refusal to shift, or a stall as the car slows.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. If the engine stalls as you come to a stop, treat it as urgent - losing the engine means losing power steering and brake assistance at a junction.
  2. Check whether the solenoid circuit is being held energised electrically before assuming a mechanical jam. A shorted wire mimics a jammed solenoid exactly and is far cheaper.
  3. Check the fluid level and condition first. It is the cheapest check and it explains more transmission complaints than every electrical fault combined.

Read this code from your own car

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
