Clutch Adaptive Learning at Limit

Severity
High
Driving
Drive only to a garage

The clutch adaptive learning has reached the end of its adjustment range. These transmissions continuously learn where the clutch bites and how long each engagement takes, compensating for wear as it happens. Reaching the limit means there is no compensation left - which on a high-mileage vehicle usually means the clutch is simply worn out.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Ask whether a clutch has been fitted recently without resetting the adaptation. If so, resetting it is the repair and nothing needs replacing.
  2. Assess clutch wear. On a high-mileage vehicle this code usually means the clutch has reached the end of its life, and no amount of electrical diagnosis changes that.
  3. Look for oil contamination. A leaking crankshaft rear seal or gearbox input seal soaks the clutch, and replacing the clutch without fixing the leak repeats the failure.
  4. Run the adaptation procedure and see whether it completes. If it immediately returns to the limit, the mechanical condition is the answer.
  5. Do not keep driving a clutch that is slipping - it destroys itself quickly and can damage the flywheel with it.
