Unexpected Mechanical Gear Disengagement

Severity

Driving
Stop driving

The transmission came out of gear on its own. The module commanded a gear, the transmission was in it, and then it was not - without being asked. That means drive can disappear without warning, and it can happen at any speed: pulling out of a junction, overtaking, or climbing a hill in traffic.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Stop driving. Losing drive while overtaking or pulling into traffic is a genuine hazard, and this code says it has already happened once.
  2. Check the fluid level and condition first. It is the cheapest check and it explains more transmission complaints than every electrical fault combined. Check for clutch material while you are there.
  3. Read all codes. Ratio, pressure or solenoid codes alongside this one identify what let go.
  4. Have the vehicle recovered rather than driven to a garage. This is not a fault that gives warning before it repeats.
  5. A line pressure test is the way to separate a hydraulic cause from a worn clutch, and it is worth doing before any parts are bought.

Read this code from your own car

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
