Gear Shift Direction Circuit High

Severity
High
Driving
Drive only to a garage

A fault in the gear shift direction circuit - a high reading, usually a short to voltage or a lost earth. Inside an automated manual gearbox the selector shaft moves on two axes, exactly as a driver's hand does: this one moves the selector shaft fore and aft to engage a gear. Without control of it, gear changes will fail.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Note which gears are still available. If only movement in one direction fails, that confirms one circuit rather than a shared fault.
  2. Inspect the connector at the gearbox for corrosion and water.
  3. Measure the solenoid or actuator winding resistance against specification.
  4. Check hydraulic pressure on a hydraulically actuated system - a slow actuator is more often a pressure problem than a failed motor.
  5. Run the position calibration procedure after any repair - it is routine on these transmissions, not a last resort.

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
