Hydraulic Power Unit Leakage

Severity
High
Driving
Drive only to a garage

The hydraulic power unit is losing pressure faster than it should. On an automated manual or dual-clutch transmission, an electric pump keeps an accumulator charged and that pressure is what moves the clutch and selector actuators. A leak means the pump runs constantly to keep up, and eventually cannot.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Look underneath for a leak. Frequent pump cycling with a falling fluid level is a leak until proven otherwise.
  2. Watch the pressure reading after the pump stops. Pressure falling away quickly with the car stationary confirms it is escaping rather than being used.
  3. Suspect the accumulator if there is no external leak and the fluid level is correct.
  4. Check the hydraulic fluid level and condition.
  5. Do not leave this. A pump running constantly wears out quickly and overheats the fluid, so a cheap repair becomes an expensive one.
