Downshift Switch Circuit Low

Severity
Low
Driving
No driving restriction

The downshift switch circuit is reading low - typically shorted to earth or a switch stuck closed. Automatic shifting continues to work; what is lost is the driver's ability to ask for a gear.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Watch the switch state on the live data screen while operating the paddle or lever.
  2. Check whether the other direction still works. One direction failing points at that switch; both failing points at shared wiring or the clock spring.
  3. On steering-wheel paddles, check for horn or airbag faults alongside, which confirm a clock spring problem.
  4. Inspect a console switch for spilled drink, which is the most common cause of a stuck console switch.
  5. Confirm automatic shifting is unaffected, in which case this can wait.
