Intake Air Temperature Sensor 1 / 2 Correlation

The two intake air temperature sensors disagree. Two are fitted so their readings can be compared - one before the turbocharger or intercooler and one after, on many engines - and this code says the difference between them is not plausible. On a turbocharged engine, that can mean the intercooler is not doing its job rather than that a sensor has failed.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Compare both sensors on a vehicle that has stood overnight. Both should read close to ambient and close to each other - a difference on a cold engine identifies the drifting sensor.
  2. Check the intercooler and its ducting. On a turbocharged engine a blocked or leaking intercooler makes the two sensors genuinely disagree, and both are telling the truth.
  3. Inspect both connectors for corrosion and oil contamination.
  4. Check the reference voltage and earth at each sensor.
  5. Check for intake leaks between the two sensor positions.
