Throttle Actuator Control System - Forced Engine Shutdown

Severity
Critical
Driving
Stop driving

The module has shut the engine down deliberately. It found a throttle system fault serious enough that it judged running the engine unsafe - most often because it can no longer be certain the throttle will close when asked. Shutting down is the safest available response, but it means the engine can stop while the car is moving.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Do not keep restarting and driving. If the module has shut the engine down once it can do so again, and it will happen without warning.
  2. Have the vehicle recovered. This is not a fault to drive to a garage.
  3. Read all codes. This one records what the module did, not what went wrong - the fault that triggered it is stored alongside, and that is the one to diagnose.
  4. Check battery voltage and the earth connections. An unstable supply produces sensor disagreements that look like component failures.
  5. Inspect the throttle body for carbon and the connectors for corrosion.
  6. Compare commanded against actual throttle position on the live data screen.

Read this code from your own car

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
