Throttle Actuator Control System - Stuck Open

Severity
Critical
Driving
Stop driving

The throttle plate is stuck open. The module commanded it closed and it did not close. Carbon seizing the plate is the usual reason, and the practical effect is an engine that keeps delivering power when you lift off - a high idle at best, and at worst a car that does not slow as you expect.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Stop somewhere safe. A throttle that does not close is the one throttle fault that can make the car behave in a way the driver did not ask for.
  2. If the engine will not return to idle while you are moving, brake firmly, select neutral, and bring the car to a stop. Do not switch the ignition fully off while moving - that can lock the steering.
  3. Remove and inspect the throttle body once stopped. Carbon around the plate and a weak return spring are the two things to look for.
  4. Check nothing has been left in the intake after previous work.
  5. Run the throttle relearn procedure after any cleaning or replacement.
