Throttle Actuator Control Motor Current Range/Performance

Severity
Critical
Driving
Drive only to a garage

The current drawn by the throttle actuator motor is not what the module expects. Too much current means the plate is stiff and the motor is straining; too little means it is not moving as far as it should. Either way the module cannot trust the throttle and will restrict the engine.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Remove and inspect the throttle body. Carbon around the plate is the most common cause of a motor drawing too much current, and cleaning is often the whole repair.
  2. Be aware that power can be cut without warning. Avoid overtaking and motorway slip roads until this is fixed.
  3. Inspect the throttle body for carbon. On a drive-by-wire throttle, cleaning without running the relearn procedure afterwards can leave the idle worse than before - check whether a relearn is specified before starting.
  4. Compare commanded against actual throttle position on the live data screen through a full sweep.
  5. Inspect the connector at the throttle body for corrosion.
  6. Measure the actuator motor resistance against specification.
