Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor "C" Minimum Stop Performance

Severity
High
Driving
Drivable — book it in

Throttle or pedal position sensor "C" is not reading what the module expects at the closed end of its travel. The module learns where each sensor sits when the pedal is released and the throttle is at rest, and compares against it. A shifted minimum usually means carbon holding the throttle plate slightly open, or a sensor whose track has worn at the position it spends most of its life in.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Inspect the throttle body for carbon holding the plate off its rest position.
  2. Watch all the pedal and throttle position readings together on the live data screen while pressing the pedal slowly through its full travel. The one that jumps, sticks or does not follow the others is the fault.
  3. Check the reference voltage and earth at the sensor. Several sensors usually share these, so a lost reference produces a scatter of codes from healthy sensors.
  4. Inspect the connector for corrosion and water, and the harness at the pedal for damage.
  5. Look for other codes sharing the same reference circuit before condemning this sensor.
  6. On most vehicles the pedal sensors are part of the pedal assembly and are not supplied separately - establish that before ordering.

Read this code from your own car

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
