Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch "D"/"E" Voltage Correlation

Severity
Critical
Driving
Drive only to a garage

Position sensors "D" and "E" disagree. Several sensors watch the same pedal or throttle precisely so that one failing can be caught, and this code is that check working - the module cannot tell which of the two is wrong, so it will not act on either and drops into reduced power.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Watch both sensors of the pair together through the full pedal travel. The one that does not track the other is the fault.
  2. Check the shared reference voltage and earth first - a marginal reference makes two healthy sensors disagree.
  3. Watch all the pedal and throttle position readings together on the live data screen while pressing the pedal slowly through its full travel. The one that jumps, sticks or does not follow the others is the fault.
  4. Check the reference voltage and earth at the sensor. Several sensors usually share these, so a lost reference produces a scatter of codes from healthy sensors.
  5. Inspect the connector for corrosion and water, and the harness at the pedal for damage.
  6. Look for other codes sharing the same reference circuit before condemning this sensor.
  7. On most vehicles the pedal sensors are part of the pedal assembly and are not supplied separately - establish that before ordering.

Read this code from your own car

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
