Throttle Actuator Control System - Idle Position Not Learned

Severity
Medium
Driving
Drivable — book it in

The throttle's idle position has not been learned. These systems measure where the throttle plate rests when unpowered and use that as their zero point - and after cleaning, replacement or a battery disconnection, that reference is gone until the relearn procedure is run. Nothing has failed; a calibration is missing.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Ask what was done. Throttle body cleaning, replacement or a battery disconnection immediately before this appeared is the explanation.
  2. Run the relearn procedure. It usually requires specific conditions - a warm engine, everything switched off, the accelerator untouched - and must be allowed to finish.
  3. Clear any other stored faults first. The procedure will not complete while another fault is active.
  4. If the relearn will not complete, check the plate reaches its true rest position - carbon can hold it slightly open.
  5. Do not replace parts for this code. It is a procedure, not a component.

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
