Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor "E" Maximum Stop Performance

Severity
High
Driving
Drivable — book it in

Throttle or pedal position sensor "E" is not reading what the module expects at the fully open end of its travel. Either the sensor is drifting, or the throttle or pedal is not physically reaching its stop - a floor mat under the pedal will do exactly that.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Check nothing is fouling the pedal - a floor mat, a mat laid on top of the original, or an object under the pedal will stop it reaching full travel, and that is worth eliminating before anything electrical.
  2. Watch all the pedal and throttle position readings together on the live data screen while pressing the pedal slowly through its full travel. The one that jumps, sticks or does not follow the others is the fault.
  3. Check the reference voltage and earth at the sensor. Several sensors usually share these, so a lost reference produces a scatter of codes from healthy sensors.
  4. Inspect the connector for corrosion and water, and the harness at the pedal for damage.
  5. Look for other codes sharing the same reference circuit before condemning this sensor.
  6. On most vehicles the pedal sensors are part of the pedal assembly and are not supplied separately - establish that before ordering.

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
