Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor 2 Circuit

A fault in the second engine coolant temperature sensor circuit. Many engines use two, at different points in the cooling system, so the module can see both what is entering the engine and what is leaving it.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Compare the reported temperature with the other coolant sensor and with ambient on a vehicle that has stood overnight. All should agree closely when cold.
  2. Check the coolant level and look for leaks. A low level uncovers the sensor and produces these codes with a good sensor.
  3. Inspect the connector for corrosion.
  4. Check the reference voltage and earth at the sensor.
  5. Watch the temperature climb from cold on a drive - it should rise smoothly and settle.
