Throttle Actuator Control Motor Circuit Low

Severity
Critical
Driving
Drive only to a garage

The throttle actuator motor circuit is reading low - typically shorted to earth or an open circuit. The module cannot control the throttle, so the engine drops into a reduced-power mode.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Disconnect the throttle body and check whether the low reading persists at the harness. If it does, the fault is in the wiring rather than the actuator.
  2. Be aware that power can be cut without warning. Avoid overtaking and motorway slip roads until this is fixed.
  3. Inspect the throttle body for carbon. On a drive-by-wire throttle, cleaning without running the relearn procedure afterwards can leave the idle worse than before - check whether a relearn is specified before starting.
  4. Compare commanded against actual throttle position on the live data screen through a full sweep.
  5. Inspect the connector at the throttle body for corrosion.
  6. Measure the actuator motor resistance against specification.
