Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch "A"/"C" Voltage Correlation

Severity
High
Driving
Drive only to a garage

The two throttle or pedal position sensors "A"/"C" disagree with each other. These systems use more than one sensor deliberately so the module can cross-check them; when they stop agreeing it cannot tell which one to believe, so it takes the safe option and limits power. This is a designed safety behaviour rather than a malfunction of the limp mode itself.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Take the reduced-power mode seriously - it exists because the module cannot trust the pedal, and it may engage without warning.
  2. Watch both sensor values side by side on the live data screen through a slow pedal sweep. The one that jumps, sticks or reads implausibly is the faulty one.
  3. Inspect both connectors for corrosion and water ingress.
  4. Check the throttle plate for carbon build-up preventing free movement.
  5. On many vehicles both sensors live inside one throttle body assembly, in which case the assembly is replaced as a unit.
